Home quarantine’ for returnees from abroad riddled with breaches

When Bangladesh is struggling to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the country, mobile courts in different districts on Thursday fined 16 people for breaching the home-quarantine rules.
In Chapainawabganj, a mobile court fined two people in Gomastapur upazila for
the breaching the home-quarantine rules.
Mizanur Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said the two recently returned home from India. Despite being advised to maintain a 14-day quarantine by the government, they were wandering around the locality.
“Being informed by the locals, we went there and fined one Tk 20,000 and the other Tk 5,000,” he said, adding that a total of 366 people were quarantined in the district.
In Sherpur, the authorities sent 13 more overseas returnees into quarantine that took the number of total quarantined people to 26.
Dr AKM Anwarur Rauf, district civil surgeon, confirmed the information, saying they along with other government agencies are monitoring the quarantined people.
In Chandpur, two Italy returnees were fined Tk 10,000 each at Suhilpur village of Hajiganj upazila for breaching the quarantine rules.
Baishakhi Barua, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said he fined them as they came in contact with others violating the quarantine rules.
Besides, a 45-year-old woman was taken into the isolation unit in Matlab Uttar Upazila.
She was admitted to the isolation unit of the upazila health complex, Civil Surgeon Dr Md Shakhawat Ullah said, adding that there are 171 people in home-quarantine in the district.
In Rajbari, a mobile court fined two overseas returnees Tk 10,000 each in Kalukhali upazila in afternoon.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nurul Alam said they returned home in recent days from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia.
In Faridpur, two people were fined through a mobile court for the same offence in Charbhadrasan upazila. Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jesmin Sultan fined them Tk 11,000.
Currently, 42 people are being kept in home-quarantine in the district and three were released on completion of quarantine period, said Deputy Civil Surgeon of the district Khaledur Rahman Mia.
In Laxmipur, 161 people were quarantined on Thursday, taking the number of quarantined people in the district to 375.
Civil Surgeon Dr Abdul Gaffar said they kept the quarantined people under close observation.
Meanwhile, two overseas returnees were fined Tk 20,000 at Chandipur of Ramganj upazila for breaching the home-quarantine rules.
In Natore, nine people, who have recently returned from Middle Eastern countries, were quarantined.
According the civil surgeon’s office, 27 people are maintaining quarantine in the district while two were released on completion of home-quarantine.
In Barguna, 91 people, including 45 in the last 24 hours till Thursday morning, were quarantined after they returned home from abroad.
In Khulna, 30 overseas returnees were home-quarantined until Thursday morning. It was reported that a total of 2,546 people returned home from abroad in the last two weeks.
Besides, a mobile court fined an overseas returnee Tk 500 in Dacope upazila for breaching home-quarantine.
In Kurigram, 35 people are currently maintaining quarantine though a total of 540 people have reportedly returned home from abroad in the last two weeks.
In Munshiganj, five people were fined Tk 35,000 for breaching home quarantine in Sadar, Tongibari and Sirajdikhan upazilas.
