The students of Home Economics College on Saturday staged demonstrations in the city’s Azimpur, blocking Nilkhet intersection for three hours to press home their various demands, including status of an institute under Dhaka University. A group of students took to the street in front of their college at Azimpur at about 12:00 noon and staged demonstrations after blocking the road. Vehicular movement on the road from Nilkhet to Azimpur came to halt due to the blockade. Traffic movement was, however, restored at about 3:00 pm after police intervened.
“The first year students of the college boycotted their examinations and joined the blockade programme yesterday. We want the status of an institute under Dhaka University,” Sabrin Sultana, a Masters student told The New Nation.
The students vowed to block the capital’s Nilkhet intersection for an indefinite period from Monday until the declaration of the college as an institute of Dhaka University. They also programmed to boycott their classes and examinations from Monday in favour of their demands. Their other demands included increase of transport and library facilities, sources said.
Meanwhile, four Home Economics Colleges are under Dhaka University till date. They are College of Home Economics, National College of Home Economics, Bangladesh Home Economics College and Mymensingh Home Economics College.
