Homebred cattle appear to be dominating the makeshift livestock markets in the capital with only four days left of the Eid-ul-Azha, traders and buyers said yesterday.
“Home-reared sacrificial animals this year visibly dominate the market as a massive campaign was underway in the recent past to grow cattle at farmers’ homesteads targeting the Eid-ul- Azha,” cattle trader Alamgir Hossain of Kushtia told. He added: “People are fond of the homebred cattle as well.” Traders and buyers echoed Khan as a BSS correspondent visited different cattle markets while the north and south city corporations this year set up 23 cattle markets at different parts of the capital.
Visiting some cattle markets including Kamlapur markets near Motijheel, Sanir Akhra of Jatrabari and Bhasantek, the BSS correspondent saw herds of huge home-reared cattle which outnumbered the Indian ones.
The homebred animals were brought into the markets from districts including Pabna, Kushtia, Sirajganj, Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj. Earlier reports said Indian authorities imposed restrictions on cattle export while traders said the inrush of huge number
of homegrown cattle appeared adequate to fulfill the demands during the Eid. The Eid cattle markets will officially be opened today under the supervision of both Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), but the cattle markets’ leaseholders started selling cattle.
The city corporations allowed erection of makeshift huts at earmarked locations with bamboos while leaseholders developed arrangements for unloading cattle and accommodations of traders and facilities for law enforcement agencies, veterinarians and others concerned at these temporary markets. Traders said until yesterday the cattle price appeared a bit high but it could come down in the next two days depending on supply situation.
Talking to BSS, businessman Khalek Miah, who is from Norail, said, “He brought 12 oxen and 10 goats in the markets from Kushtia. I sold a cow at the cost of Taka 32 thousand yesterday”.
Apart from the permanent cattle market at Gabtoli, city corporations earmarked 22 places for developing makeshift markets, of which 14 are within jurisdiction of DSCC and eight under DNCC.
The locations of the DSCC’s temporary markets have been set up at Jigatala-Hajaribagh, Dhupkhola, Rahmatganj playground, Meradia Bazar in Khilgaon, Sadek Hossain Khoka playground, Shahjahanpur Moitri Sangha ground, Brothers Union Balurmath, Postogola-Shashanghat, Lalbagh Delwar Hossain playground, Kamrangirchar cattle market, Jatrabari kitchen market and the free space adjoining Kamalapur Rail Station.
The DNCC’s temporary markets are: the open area near Khilkhet-Banorupa Residential Project area, the bridges at Uttara 15 and 16, Mirpur Section-6, the open space adjoining Bhasantek Palli ground, Badda and the free space between Asian City Housing and Bhatara.
