The Holy Ashura was observed in Chittagong and its adjacent areas on Saturday commemorating the Karbala tragedy in which Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA) embraced martyrdom bravely fighting for truth and justice about 1,355 years ago. On the 10th of Muharram in the Hijri year 61, Hazrat Imam Hossain (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SA) , along with members of his family and followers were brutally killed by the treacherous and heinous soldiers of Yazid at the battle of Karbala maidan in Iraq.
The members of the Shia community brought out a separate condolence processions known as Matham from Sadarghat and Halishahar area in the port city in the morning period. Meanwhile non-Bengali Bihari community in Chittagong brought out Tazia Michil(procession) from Sardar Bahadur Nagar, Wireless colony, Firojshah colony, Roufabad and Sher shah colony separately to commemorate the painful Karbala Tragedy.
The participants in the Matham processions paraded through the different streets chanting “Hai Hussain, Hai Hussain” repenting the most tragic incident.
In the processions, the Shia Muslims expressed profound grief by flagellating themselves on the back with chains and also beating their heads to demonstrate their deep penance for the sufferings of Imam Hussain (RA). Muslim families in the port city also offered Fateha as a mark of respect to the day.
