The Eid-ul Azha vacation ended on Sunday. But the usually busy city roads and footpaths isolated due to thin traffic and small number of pedestrians.
Even, at the heart of the government machinery, the Secretariat, is yet to get momentum, as most of the civil servants did not return there, overcoming holiday hangover.
The commercial hubs, the super markets and the educational institutions remained closed. The kitchen markets are witnessed presence of very few customers and sellers. The same scenario was seen in the Dhaka courts as well.
Although, several gov
ernment and semi government offices, private banks and important organisations re-opened on Sunday with the end of three-day long Eid vacation (September 24-26) the overall working atmosphere was missing due to absence of a number of officials and employees.
The officials and staff were seen exchanging Eid greetings with their colleagues and embracing one another.
The educational institutions including Dhaka University looked like deserts due to absence of regular students. “Most of the schools and colleges are closed now. If you like to see the actual Dhaka life, you have to wait till next Sunday. The educational institutions of the city will re-open by October 5,” Abdul Hakim, Principal of a Kinder Garten said at Mirpur yesterday.
A senior official of BGMEA said that most of the garment factories of the city would remain closed till Saturday next. “You will see the usual rush in the industrial belt next week after the workers return. Several million garment workers left Dhaka to enjoy the three-day Eid-ul Azha vacation,” he stated.
Sources said, around 70 lakh people out of nearly 1.5 crore people living in the capital usually leave Dhaka to go home ahead of the Eid every year and a large number of them are garment workers.
