Sylhet Bureau :
After 13 years Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) started its holding tax reassessment programme yesterday.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury inaugurated the programme by receiving a form for his residence at Kumarpara area.
Six teams of SCC visited wards 1, 2, 3, 15, 17 and 18 on the first day of the programme and gave out reassessment forms to the holding owners with an instruction to submit them within seven days.
According to the SCC, last holding tax reassessment was completed in 2006. The city corporation has provisions to reassess it after five years.
Chandan Das, assessor of SCC, said if the holding owners do not fill out the form on their own and submit it in time, the corporation will set the tax unilaterally.
Badrul Haque, secretary of the corporation, said that all new and old holdings will come under the reassessment programme and there are around 55,000 holdings in 27 wards of the city.
Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said, ‘During my first term as mayor, I tried to initiate the reassessment but failed as I was in jail for 3 years. But this time it will be completed accordingly and without any negligence’.
‘Holding tax is a notable source of revenue for the city corporation,’ he said, urging the city residents to cooperate willingly.
