Chittagong Bureau :
The Hills Management and Rehabilitation Committee of Chittagong is making a list of the illegal occupiers of the government hills in the region with a view to taking stern action against the unlawful practice.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong Mohammed Zillur Rahman Chowdhury expressed his dissatisfaction over the grabbing of the government hills in Chittagong. He said, “The Jangal Silimpur hills have been occupied illegally, where the illegal occupiers are constructing buildings.” “Several hundred buildings have already been constructed, while construction of several hundred others is going on,” he added.
Addressing the 17th meeting of the Hills Management and Rehabilitation Committee of Chittagong held yesterday at the office of the Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong office, DC Zillur Rahman Chowdhury also said, “Musa Bin Shamser, who is one of billionaires in Bangladesh, couldn’t occupy the government-owned Jangal Silimpur hills and lands but the occupiers in Chittagong could do so.”
He asked Najmul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Sitakunda, why he did not take step to evict the illegal occupiers thus far. Najmul Islam said, “The Jangal Silimpur hills are in remote areas.
The occupiers constructed most modern road from Baizid Bostami to the Jangal Silimpur hills. I think the road is more expensive than the CDA constructed roads.”
He said, “The occupiers and mafias patronized by the ruling Awami League leaders are making a separate city at government-owned Jangal Silimpur hills area.”
DC of Chittagong directed all concerned officials to submit the list of the people who occupied government land and hills at city and rural areas of Chittagong. He said, “The district administration will evict all the illegal occupiers from government lands and hills of Chittagong.” Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Ruhul Amin presided over the meeting of the Hills Management and Rehabilitation Committee of Chittagong.
Among others, Additional Divisional Commissioner Shankar Ranjan Shaha, UNO of 14 upazilas of Chittagong, Director of Department of Environment (DoE) Chittagong Masud Karim and representatives from Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Chittagong WASA, Fire Service and Civil Defense and Army attended the meeting.
