Historic 6-point Demand Day observed

The historic six-point Demand Day was observed here on Wednesday with a renewed pledge for completing the unfinished tasks of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through moving forward the ongoing massive development works across the country.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on this day in 1966 announced the six- point demand at city’s Laldighi Maidan aiming at earning independence that later triggered strong commotion in former East Pakistan, now Bangladesh and subsequently Bangabandhu and his party fell prey to the oppression and torture of Pakistani military ruler.
Awami League (AL), its associate organizations, different socio- cultural and professional bodies observed the day through daylong programmes.
The programmes included placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, holding discussions, bringing out processions and playing of the recorded historic speeches of Bangabandhu.
To mark the day, Chittagong city AL arranged a discussion meeting at its party office here this afternoon.
Chittagong city AL president and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury presided over the meeting. AL leaders Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury, Rezaul Karim, Khurshed Alam Sujan, Noyom Uddin Chowdhury, among others addressed it.
The speakers said the six-point demand, declared by Bangabandhu, was a Magna Carta in the history that aimed at liberating Bengali people from all sorts of oppression, injustice and exploitation perpetrated by Pakistan.
The AL leaders also paid rich tributes to the memories of Bangabandhu who spearheaded the movement and sacrificed his life for establishing rights of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury said AL would foil all conspiracies of the vested quarter and assist the government to build a prosperous country free from poverty, hunger, unemployment and corruption.
He also thanked the present government for declaring a mass-people welfare oriented budget for next fiscal year.
