Sylhet Bureau :
A group of people attacked the house of a Hindu businessman, also local union council member, in Sylhet on Wednesday on allegation of spreading rumors against Islam on Facebook.
Shimul Dev Shivu, member of Burung Bazar union council under Osmani Nagar Upazila in the district, alleged that some 200 people coming from an Eid congregation in the area marched towards his home near the bazaar chanting slogans against him.
They hurled stones and brick-chips on his tin-shed house and ransacked furniture in the house, he said.
Shibu, also general secretary of Burunga Bazar Traders’ Association, claimed that unidentified people opened a facebook account in the name of his younger brother, Dibakar S Dev, some 10 days back using false information, and started posting status against Islam on the page.
‘We recorded a general diary in this regard with Osmani Nagar police station on May 31, but a group of people suddenly attacked my house without any provocation,’ Shivu alleged.
Osmani Nagar police officer-in-charge Al Mamun told that local elite, led by Burunga union chairman Khaled Ahmad, already settled the issue through a social arbitration held at the union council on Friday afternoon.
The posts of the facebook account, from which rumors against Islam were spread, have been sent to the information technology experts of Criminal Investigation Department to identify the people behind the account.
‘Legal steps would also be taken in this regard after identification of the people,’ the OC added.
