Members of the Hindu community began celebrating one of their major religious festivals, Rath Yatra with due religious and festivity on Sunday.
Thousands of Hindu devotees gathered at the selected places and joined with full enthusiasm the ritual of pulling chariots to celebrate the occasion.
The biggest and the oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in Bagerhat district as well as the 2nd biggest and oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in the country was brought out from Laupala, 14 kilometers away from here on Sunday paraded the area with festive mood.
Thousands of Hindu community members including female and children joined in pulling the rath (chariot) by long ropes.
The participants attired in traditional Hindu costumes beat drums and played other musical instruments and walked on the area.
A large number of onlookers’ of various creeds and cast were seen witnessing the colourful Rath Yatra on both sides of the roads.
As a part of the festival, a month-long and huge ‘Rather Mela’ is also being held around the Laupala rath with the participation of huge number of shops displaying various traditional and handicrafts, baby toys and sweetmeat.
A huge crowd was seen thronging the fair throughout the day. Hundreds of devotees from different parts of the district as well neighboring areas assembled there to observe the century old Rath Yatra festival of Hindu community.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies tightened up security measures averting any untoward incident for the sake of ensuring communal harmony on the occasion.
