Hilsa Preservation drives: Current nets worth 9 cr seized, 178 fishermen jailed

Mobile courts conducted to preserve Hilsa seized current nets worth Tk9 crore and finned 178 fishermen in the last three days until Saturday.
Public Relations officer of Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Md Iftekhn Hossain said 442 mobile courts conducted 3,059 drives across the country during the period and fined 178 fishermen Tk6 lakh under the Fisheries Act.
A 22-day ban on catching, selling, and transporting of ilish is in action from October 14 to November 4. This is the peak period when Ilish releases eggs.
To reduce the fishermen’s hardship during this period the government had allocated 10,566.84 tons of VGF rice them. Altogether, 528,342 families in 152 upazilas of 36 districts got 20kg rice each before the start of the main breeding season of ilish. Still they decided to catch ilish despite the ban.
