The rampant hill cutting is the prime cause of the landslide here. In this cause district administration fine three persons total Tk 50 thousands on Thursday afternoon in Jalalabad area under Kulaura Upazila of Moulvibazar district.
They were identified as Abdul Basit, 45, Lal Mia, 39, and Shafiqur Rahman, 47, boths residents of Jalalabad village fines tk. 50,000 and In default, they are to suffer another 15 days in jail for cutting hills and carrying hilly soil under environment Protection Act, said MD. He said, in the winter and dry season, the dishonest people used to cut the hills for collecting soil and leveling the land for construction works. This work will continue to protect government interests.
 Jabed Mia, a local of Jalalabad village area under same Upazila said some dishonest persons and syndicates cutting hills at the area. Landslide is one of the prime problems in the hilly area. Huge incidents of landslide occurred every year during rainy season. We are living with passing days at high risk due to probability of landslide.
Moulvibazar Environmental Journalists Forum general secretary Muhaimin Milton said, hill cutting no rights without the permission of the Department of Environment. The incidents of the landslide were occurred in almost every year in Moulvibazar hilly area. Despite the law of the government against hill cutting in the hills are already been cut during last several years.
 The some category people who had responsible for catastrophe to the hills are local terrors and touts, influential political men, truck owners, contractors, brick kiln owners, real estate developers and some government officials, he added.
Abdul Karim Kim, general secretary of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon, Sylhet chapter told this correspondent, some dishonest people including political influential, local goons and administrative persons are involved like a syndicate in the rampant hill cutting in the area resulting in serious ecological imbalance and environmental disaster.
Some people are exposed to hill slides due to construction of houses and commercial establishments through leveling hills in most unplanned way. Plundering of hills has also posed a serious threat to other residential houses, environment and biodiversity, he added.
 Tofail Islam, deputy commissioner of Moulvibazar said, awareness is the very important for the mass people including local representatives to stop hill cutting. If any people inform us then we take action easily.
