Staff Reporter :
The extortion business of transgender people (Hijra) has reached extreme level in the capital due to lack of police monitoring. They have been collecting extortion from commuters at traffic points, targeting private cars, auto rickshaw and rickshaw passengers, sources said.
As there is no job facility and rehabilitaion policy in the country, they are engaged in various types of occurrences. They are doing extortion business in the name of help. Although they are collecting extortion from commuters in front of on-duty police, no action is taken.
“But police show zero tolerance to extortion in transports and markets” claimed Majid, a police man.
In the recent time, transgender are more aggressive and frequently get into buses to collect money in a forceful manner. The bus passengers have no option but to pay the toll to avoid harassment and public nuisance.
Regarding the issue, Majharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Police Station, told The New Nation that his area was Hijra extortion-free. “If we find Hijras extorting people, we arrest them and hand them to Social Welfare Ministry’s rehabilitaion authority”.
