Bangladesh broke all its previous records in coronavirus infection, with 54 new positive cases and three deaths in last 24 hours.
“The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases including the new detected ones, in the country reached 218 and rolled death toll to 20,” said Professor Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Wednesday.
The number of confirmed cases soared this week on the back of increased test, setting up a new daily record for the sixth day.
Dr. Sabrina said, in the last 24-hours, none of the patients recovered although 33 infected returned homes after getting recovery till Tuesday.
Of the 54 new cases, 39 were detected in Dhaka, one in a upazila of Dhaka district and others in remaining past of the country.
Of them, she said, 33 are males and 21 are females.
Five patients are 11-20 year old, 15 are 21-30, 10 are 31-40, seven are 41-50, seven are 51-60 and the rest are above 60, the IEDCR director also revealed.

General of Health Services (DGHS), said in the briefing that a total of 981 samples were tested while a total of 988 samples collected in the last 24 hours across the country.
Replying to a query, Sania Tahmina said that the reasons as to why the rest of seven samples were not tested would be known later.
Then 563 of those samples were collected from Dhaka and the rests from beyond the capital city.
She said, 5,164 samples have been tested so far for coronavirus infection in the country.
First covid-19 infected patient was found in Bangladesh on March 8, the first death occurred from coronavirus on March 18 in the country. The coronavirus cases exceed 200 within a month in the country.
