Bangladesh on Tuesday reported three more deaths and 790 cases of new infections on account of Covid-19 thrust in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a briefing.
The number of new cases is the highest on a single day in the country.
“With the new cases, the death toll reached 186 and the total number of infected now stands at 11,719,” said Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of DGHS, in the press briefing in Dhaka.
Dr. Sultana said that total a 6,241 people were tested in 33 labs across the country since Tuesday.
She said that two of the deceased were males. Two were above 60 and another between 41-50 years. Two were from Dhaka.
The speed of infections continued. It was 786 on Tuesday, 688 on Monday, 665 on Sunday, and 552 on Saturday.
In the past week, from April 30 to May 6, at least 4,617 people got infected with Covid-19.
On April 6, just a month ago, the day’s infections was 35 and the number of total infected passed 100 raising the total figure to 123 on the day.
Dr. Sultana said, 184 people were put under isolation across the country in the period.
She said that 1,794 suspected patients were in isolation on Wednesday.
She said that booths to collect samples would be installed to reach the people with the testing services.
No new patients of Covid-19 recovered in the country in the last 24 hours. The total recovery number stands at 1,403 she added.
“Although IEDCR is collecting samples from suspected patients, the whole process is being coordinated by DGHS now,” she said.
“In collecting samples from homes, we will be prioritising senior citizens and those who are differently able,” Dr. Sultana said.
She also said that the government is working to set up sample collection booths across the capital soon.
Dr. Sultana said also that sample collection booths are also being set up.
“BRAC is helping the DGHS in this regard. So far the NGO has set up four booths at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), three at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and one at Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Memorial Special Hospital,” She said. She also noted that an organisation under Oval Group is collecting samples through booths at Titumir College in Dhaka city, Narayanganj and Siddhirganj. “The construction of more booths is in progress. The booths should be within the reach of everyone,” Dr. Sultana said.
Dr Sultana said although IEDCR is involved in other activities, including research and quality control, it is continuing the sample collection activities. None of the activities has been stopped or suspended.
