High Court circuit bench demanded

Chittagong District Lawyers Association (CDLA) and the local lawyers irrespective of political opinions unanimously announced to launch movement demanding establishment of circuit bench of the High Court Division in Chittagong by April 30 next.
 An ultimatum to this effect was given to Prime Minister, Law Minister, Cabinet , Supreme court in the meantime, sources said.
The CDLA members and the senior advocates of the port city announced it at a press meet held at Chittagong Press Club premises on Saturday under the banner of High Court Circuit Bench Implementation Council . Bar council member Advocate Kabir Chowdhury read out the written statement before the mediamen.
The press meet was told that six permanent bench of the HC in six divisional headquarters was established in 1982 which was given status of circuit bench on June 1986 by an order of the then Martial Law Regulations. But again these circuit bench redesignatd as permanent bench as per clause2(ka) of 8th amendment of the constitution in 1986. But on September 2, 1989, the clause of the 8th amendment of the constitution was also abrogated by the majority opinions of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court and these all divisional HC benches back to Dhaka again. Since then, the local lawyers have been demanding revival of the HC bench in Chittagong.
Mentionable that the matter of reinstating the HC Bench in Chittagong was also apprised to the Prime Minister while visiting port city in 2010 for the inauguration of the new court building of the Chittagong judiciary at Fairy Hill in the city and the Prime Minister assured for establishing circuit bench alongwith Admirality Court in Chittagong.
 While contacted district Public Prosecutor Advocate Abul Hashem told this correspondent that there is no contradictions with the specific constitution clause2(ka) for opening a Circuit Bench rather permanent bench.
