A Hifazat-e Islam leader has been granted bail for six months in five cases, including three related to killing of policemen and violence, out of seven cases.
The bench of Justices Naima Haider and Zafar Ahmed granted bail to Mohammad Wakkas on Monday.
The defence had, of course, sought the bail for him in all seven cases.
Hifazat supporters had attacked police during their rally at Motijheel in Dhaka on May 5 last year. Paltan and Motijheel police filed cases against him the following day.
Senior lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain
represented the defense. He was assisted by lawyer Masud Rana.
Deputy Attorney General Khandker Diliruzzaman, who stood for the state, said “We will appeal against the bail in the cases.”
Detective police arrested Wakkas at the capital’s Malibagh on Sept 2 and had been behind bars ever since.
The Hifazat is back in news after an audio tape purportedly from the al-Qaeda chief Ayman Al-Zawahiri lambasted the government’s crackdown on the Hifazat activists during the May 5 rally.
Al-Zawahiri was heard blaming the Bangladesh government for killing ‘thousands of people’ in the crackdown.
The Chittagong-based outfit made the similar claim.
