Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday asked the UN Women Bangladesh to play a significant role in resolving housing and transport problems of professional women in the country.
She made the call when outgoing Country Representative of the UN Women Christine Hunter met her at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office.
Dr Shirin, also chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s (CPA) Executive Committee, said the UN Women Bangladesh can play a desired role in ensuring safe residences for professional women working in the garment and other sectors by constructing dormitory and hostels.
Christine Hunter expressed her willingness to work with the government for the construction of safe residences for professional women and resolving the transport crisis of the women as well as ensuring healthy and safe workplaces for grassroots professional women, said a Parliament Secretariat release.
During the meeting, women empowerment, socio-economic development, parliamentary businesses, social safety and labour rights in the country also came up for discussion.
