Staff Reporter :
Some businessmen on Wednesday requested the government to permit them to invest in foreign countries.
The request was made at a roundtable on “Overseas Investment by Bangladeshi Entrepreneurs” organized by the International Business Forum, Bangladesh (IBFB) in the city.
This is high time to permit outward investment by the Bangladeshi companies to capture business opportunities elsewhere, the meeting was told. Otherwise, the businessmen argued, investors from other countries would take advantage of the situation.
AK Azad, former President of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) said, local investors are now ready to explore business opportunities
in other countries. Matiur Rahman, Chairman and Managing Director of Uttara Motors Ltd (UML) said, Bangladeshi companies have developed certain capacity, but they are not promoting their brands globally.
He said that the Bangladesh businessmen should open retail shops in different countries to brand Bangladeshi products.
He said that the government should keep free flow of investment in overseas for local entrepreneurs. He said, “Our foreign exchange reserve have been increasing, but there is no fresh investment.”
He said, many of local entrepreneurs are showing interest to invest abroad.
Farash Uddin Ahmed, former Governor of Bangladesh Bank as a chief guest said, the country’s business capacity has been increasing. He said that the local entrepreneurs should focus on manufacturing industry.
