City detective police in Chittagong arrested Senior Naye-be-Ameer of Hefazat Islam Mufti Ezharul Islam on Friday afternoon.
DB police rounded him up from Lalkhan Bazar Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasa in the city at about 3 pm. There are number of
cases against him pending with different police stations, sources said.
Additional Deputy Police Commissioner of CMP SM Tanveer Arafat said that after his arrest he had been taken to the DB office at Laldighi.
Sources said, Ezharul Islam and his son Mufti Harun are charged with maintaining link with different international militant groups. Mufti Haroon was arrested in 2010 on the charge of having liaison with the Laskar-e-Taiyaba, which two Laskar militants, who were arrested in India in 2009, confessed.
After their confession, Mufti Haroon was arrested in 2010. Militant group Harkatul Jihad was reportedly formed in the Mufti’s Madrasa and the said militant group tried to assassinate Poet Shamsur Rahman in 1999. Besides, Mufti Ezhar is the President of one faction of the Islami Oikya Jote and Nezame Islam Party, sources added.
