Hefazat-e-Islam leader Maulana Mamunul Haque has reportedly cancelled his scheduled program at Hathazari Madrasa in Chittagong in the face of agitation programs led by Bangladesh Chhatra League in the area to resist his arrival.
“Maulana Mamunul Haque was supposed to attend a religious program at the Hathazari Madrasa Friday after Jummah prayer. But, considering the
agitation centring his arrival, he has decided not to attend and avoid any untoward incident,” confirmed a top leader of the hardline Islamist organization, while wishing to remain anonymous.
Mamunul has recently been featured for insulting Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by opposing the construction of his sculptures across the country.
Earlier in the day, leaders and activists of Chhatra League announced that they would resist Mamunul from attending the religious program in Hathazari upazila of Chittagong.
The agitation followed Thursday’s rally led by Chhatra League, on Chittagong Press Club premises, protesting the objectionable comments about Bangabandhu’s sculptures recently made by the controversial Islamic preacher. Zakariya Dastagir, Chhatra League secretary of Chittagong city chapter said that Mamunul would not be allowed to enter Chittagong. He also said that the people of Chittagong have rejected him with disdain.
“Mamunul is out to create chaos and anarchy in the country through his provocative speech. We will not let him in Chittagong,” said he.
Meanwhile, additional police had been deployed in the city and Hathazari upazila to avert any untoward incident as Chhatra League men took positions in different thoroughfares to resist Mamunul.
