A Narayanganj court yesterday afternoon placed Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque on a three-day remand, responding to an appeal of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Farhana Ferdous of Narayanganj passed the order.
Earlier, Court Police Inspector Asaduzzaman said that PBI showed now-defunct committee of Hefazat-e-Islam’s Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque arrested in a case filed in connection with Hefazat’s violence and sought seven days’ remand. The court granted a three-day remand after hearing.
Meanwhile, Investigation Officer of the case PBI Police Inspector Arifur Rahman told the media that an accused in his statement disclosed the names of some central leaders of Hefazat including Mamunul Haque. He directed others to carry on offences, including arson attack and vandalism.
On March 26, Hefazat-men had confrontation with police in Baitul Mukarram area of the capital during their programme opposing the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh. On the occasion, there were violence in some districts, including Narayanganj, Hathazari of Chattogram, Brahmanbaria, Habiganj and Kishoreganj.
