Chittagong, UNB – Detectives arrested Hefajat-e-Islam leader Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury from Lalkhan Bazar area in the city on Friday afternoon. He was picked up from Jamiatul Ulum Al Islamia Madrasah he founded in connection with three cases filed over a blast at the madrasah in 2013. A team of Detective Branch of police conducted a drive at the madrasah after Juma prayers and arrested Izharul, nayeb-e-ameer of Hefajat, said Kusum Dewan, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police. The Hefajat leader had been on the run after the blast at the madrasha on October 7, 2013. Three students — Zubayer, Habibur and Nurunnabi — were killed in the ‘mysterious’ explosion inside a room on the 1st floor of the four-storey hostel of the madrasah at Lalkhan Bazar in the city on October 7, 2013. Later, police conducted a drive at the hostel of the madrasah, run by the Hefajat leader, and recovered several unexploded grenades. Three cases were filed over the explosion accusing Izharul and his son Harun bin Izhar.
