The students of Home Economics College (HEC) on Tuesday blocked the Nilkhet intersection and raised slogans to make the college an institute of Dhaka University (DU) and of co-education.
About 200 students of the college took position on the the Nilkhet intersection at 10:30 am, jamming Azimpur, Mirpur Road and adjacent areas.
Sumaiya Akhter, a student of the college, said, they want the college as an institute of DU. But the college authorities remained unheeded to the students’ demand.
“Only female students can read in the Home Economics College.
We live in post-modern era. So, why co-education will not be introduced here?” Another female student questioned.
Meanwhile, the officials of the Education Ministry termed the students’ movement illogical and said why should a specialized college be an institute of DU. There are five departments: Food and Nutrition, Resource Management and Entrepreneurship, Child Development and Social Relationship, Art and Creative Studies and Clothing and Textile.
They also said that the college was established for building specialised students. There are many institutions in the country where co-education exist.
“Even Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid recently at a meeting expressed his dissatisfaction at the illogical movement of the college students,” an official of the ministry seeking anonymity told The New Nation on Tuesday.
