Heavyweight mayor candidates pass busy time

With nine days to go before the city corporation polls, the heavyweight mayoral candidates of two Dhaka city corporations passed busy time to communicate with the voters in their respective electoral areas on Sunday.
Tabith Awal, BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) along with his supporters conducted campaign in Mirpur area.
He promised the implementation of his electoral pledges if he is elected and distributed handbills among the people when he was seeking vote.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s participation in the election campaign for Tabith for the consecutive second day gave a huge boost to his preparations for the upcoming polls, he said
“She is a great leader with immense popularity. If she takes part in election campaign, it would boost up our preparations for the upcoming election. It is a great inspiration for us to get her in the election campaigns,” he said during his campaigns.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia did not breach the electoral code of conduct taking part in the election campaigns, Tabith said.
President of Jatiya Gonotantrik Dal Shafiul Alam Prodhan and some Jubo Dal leaders also took part in the campaigns for Tabith.
The Awami Legaue-endorsed mayoral hopeful for DNCC Annisul Huq said he was not worried with the presence of Khaleda Zia in the election campaigns.
No matter who is taking part in the campaigns, people must cast their votes for capable candidates, he said while conducting campaigns at Paikpara Natunbazar in Mirpur.
“Mayor’s function is to ensure the best service to the people. They will not make mistakes. They will cast vote for those who are always on their side,” he said.
Annisul Huq started his campaign walking from Mirpur Bangla College area on Sunday morning. He also exuded confidence about his success, saying that people have kept faith in him.
Meanwhile, the Awami League-backed Mayor candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Sayeed Khokon started his campaign in Tatibazar area of Old Dhaka.
Surrounded by the supporters, he also visited Sutrapur, Laxmibazar, Bahadur Shah Park area and some other parts of Old Dhaka to seek votes. Referring to his father Mohammad Hanif’s performance as Dhaka city Mayor, he promised the voters to give his best for the welfare of the city dwellers as a successor his of father.
“My father dedicated himself for the development of Dhaka city. Please give me an opportunity to serve you like my father,” he told the voters during campaigns.
Among others, Awami League leaders Mrinal Kamti Das, Haji Mohammad Selim and Golam Sarwar Kabir were with the Mayor aspirant. The BNP-backed Mayor candidate of DSCC Mirza Abbas’ wife Afroza Abbas continued her campaign for her husband at Jigatola and nearby areas in Dhanmondi at around 10 O’clock in the morning.
Some leaders of BNP’s front organizations — Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal — accompanied her during the campaigns for Mirza Abbas, who is unable to appear in person in the campaigns due to legal complications.
