The monsoon rain disrupted the normal life of the people of greater Chittagong on Tuesday. Most of the areas of Chittagong, including the low-lying areas of the port city and coastal areas of Chittagong , Cox’s Bazar, offshore island Kutubdia, Mohesh Khali, Teknaf were inundated due to the continuous torrential rains. The raining has continued from Monday night till filling this noon.
Meanwhile, Bay of Bengal is now very rough due to depression created over the Bay. The intensified depression and squally weather may affect the maritime ports and the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The unloading of cargoes has been disrupted due to the rough weather. The three ships loading with imported cargoes are waiting at the outer anchorage for unloading. However, the road communications of Chittagong with Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar have also been disrupted as the Arakan road is flooded due to the rain and tidal water. According to local meteorological department, Chittagong experienced a heavy rainfall.
As a result, the drains and canals of the city and all the rivers of the district were full to the brim of rainwater causing inundation of the low-lying areas by overflow. Besides, the Dalu, Sangu, Halda and Karnaphuli rivers were full to the brim of floodwater caused by the torrential rainfall.
The tidal waters entered at the coastal areas at Halishahar, Anwara, Banshkhali in Chittagong as the coastal embankment from Patenga to Sitakunda and Anwara and Banshkhali were damaged at many spots. The local people of the coastal belt demanded to construct the coastal embankment and marine drive road from Patenga to Sitakunda immediately. The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3 due to deep depression created in the Bay, according to meteorological department. All fishing trawlers and fishing boats over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to keep close to the coast and proceed with caution so as to take shelter at a short notice.
