Chittagong Bureau :
Incessant downpours for the past three days submerged the low-lying parts of the port city of Chittagong while it initially appeared as a welcome shower to relieve residents of sufferings from scorching heat.
The light to moderate downpour started on midday of Monday and continued still last evening while the Met office recorded 112.3 millimetres rainfall in 24 hours ending at 3pm yesterday. Meteorologists also forecast light to moderate rainfall in Chittagong division in the next 24 hours.
But downpour submerged many parts of the city including Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar, Sholokbohor, Bakalia, Number-2 Gate area, Muradpur and Agrabad inundating houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions.
Mechanised vehicles like CNG auto rickshaw, battery run tomtom and rickshaws stopped moving in areas under water while many of those were seen stuck in waters with their engines downed in knee deep waters mounting sufferings of thousands of people.
Officials of the Chittagong Port Authority said the downpour stalled handling of bulk cargoes in the country’s prime seaport. Ship movement on Chittagong to Sandwip and Hatiya coastal island remained suspended due to inclement weather and rough sea.
