Due to heavy rainfall for the last couple of days, Aman paddy seedbed in Dakop Upazila of Khulna district were inundated and as such they (Seedbeds) were damaged and thousands of farmers are in great despair in respect of producing crops. It is mentionable that the coastal area Dakop upazila is comprised with three Islands.
Due to downpour of last couple of days, all croplands of nine unions including Chalna in the locality were inundated. All the farmers depend on the production of Aman paddy. This year in the very beginning of the monsoon and during the period of purchasing seeds, severe crisis created. During the ongoing heavy rainfall, almost all the seedbeds were inundated and completely damaged. Some farmers alleged that most of the sluice gates of embankment, built by the Water Development Board (WDB) in the decade of 60, were lying out of order due to non repairing of them, besides, some influential persons have been using them according to their will and interest.
Sources said, with the financial aids of the World Bank (WB), the authorities of WDB started the spreading works of 32 and 33 no. polders of Wapda embankment and renovation and rebuilding works of some sluice gates but the works are going on in a snail pace and as such water logging already created.
On a recent visit this correspondent talked to some farmers of different villages in Dakop upazila.
Afsar Sheikh. a farmer of village Gunary in Suterkhali union told with tearful eyes that he sowed Aman paddy seeds after lending money, but due to incessant rain of the last few days, his seedbed were inundated fully, some of his seeds also washed away, due to having disorder of some sluice gates of the embankment of the Water Development Board, water logging created in their locality. Anando Mollick, another farmer of village Khatail in Pankhali union said, I cultivate Aman paddy on 30 bighas of land every year, but this year I’m in great anxiety as my seedbed was inundated due to heavy rainfall, I can’t think anything what would happen this year.
Ramkrishno Das, a farmer of village Chunkuri said, I collected two mounds of seeds at higher rate with a view to sow it on 10 bighas of lands, I also made seedbed, but seeds washed away due to heavy rainfall.
Shachin Mondol, Dinesh Gyne and Proshanto Devnath, farmers of Bajua area also echoed the farmers mentioned-above. Everywhere in the upazila, farmers are in great anxieties for arranging their staple food. UP Chairmen of nine unions said, due to heavy rainfall of the last 5/6 days, seedbeds were inundated, some sluice gates became disorders and due to renovation of some sluice gates, water supply from seedbeds are being hampered, they added.

Mosaddek Hossain, Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) of Dakop said, This year target of Aman production at nine unions of including Chalna Pourashava was taken on 19,o50 hectares of lands, most of the farmers already sowed seeds after making seedbeds, but the farmers could not remove excessive water from their seedbeds as water logging created on the seedbeds due to incessant rain, occurred in the last few days and as such most of the seedbeds were inundated, besides, some seeds also washed away.
