The city residents on Saturday faced untold sufferings as the traffic movement was halted for at least five hours on the Airport Road and its adjacent areas due to the Tabligh Jamaat’s internal clash.
Consequently, a man was killed and about 150 others were injured over establishing supremacy on Ijtema ground on the bank of the river Turag on Saturday.
To save times, a good number of commuters had to walk to their destinations. The women, children and elderly persons suffered most on the roads.
Hundreds of vehicles, mostly passenger buses, remained stuck on both sides of the busy Airport Road since the morning.
The traffic gridlock on the Airport Road severely disrupted traffic movement on many other busy roads and thoroughfares including Badda via Kuril Bishwa Road, Rampura, Hatirjheel, Malibagh, Mouchak, New Market, Farmgate and Mirpur. The traffic impasse in the city also affected the long-distance journey between the capital and other parts of the country.
A chase and counter-chase also took place between the supporters of Maulana Jubayer and Maulana Saad Kandhalv creating a heavy gridlock from Mohakhali intersection to Uttara, Traffic Inspector Asad of Abdullahpur Zone said.
Aman Ullah, a businessman, told The New Nation that he was going to Uttara at 11am. The bus stopped when he was near Banani and they had to wait for four hours.
“It was a just traffic gridlock. No bus could move. We had no second option other man waiting in the bus. We passed the disgusting times under duress,” he said.
Meanwhile, several passengers missed their international flights due to huge traffic congestion on the Airport Road in Dhaka following a clash between two factions of Tabligh Jamaat.
The passengers of local and international flights have been calling the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport authorities saying that they were going to miss their flights as they would be forced to remain stuck in a severe traffic jam on their way to the Airport.
Meanwhile, the scheduled flights left the airport with so many empty seats since morning.
Most of the flights left the Airport with a delay of around 30 minutes, Md Zakir, an official of the Control Tower told the media.
Traffic movement on the Airport Road became normal as the blockade imposed by a faction of Tabligh Jamaat was removed after four hours following requests by law enforcers.
The activists freed the road around 3:45pm.
Meanwhile, additional police with armored vehicles and water cannons have been deployed. The conflict between the two factions continued from the last session of Bishwa Ijtema, the Tabligh Jamaat’s annual event.
The groups locked into another clash over the conflict at Dhaka’s Kakrail Mosque, the headquarters of the religious group’s Bangladesh chapter, in April last.
