More than 11-hour long monsoon downpour has paralysed normal life in Barisal city on Thursday.
River communication has been disrupted in different areas and people demanded construction of town protection dam, excavating the canals and introducing sustainable scientific drainage and swearage systems to solve water logging problem in the city.
Barisal River Port authourity suspened operations of ML ( less than 65-feet long) water transports on the river routes from this port since Monday last, informed Mustafizur Rahman, Barisal River Port Officer- In-Charge.
The action was taken after weather signal no. 2 hoisted in the port form June 22 morning and will cntinue till improvement of the weather condition, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) official said.
Barisal citizens faced mid to heavy rainfall started from Wednesday night and continued till this report on Thursday noon with breaks and the city sky was covered by deep cloud without sunlight whole the day.
Most of the people on Thursday became bound to confine themselves inside the room as transports became scarce on city roads demanding higher-fare from the passengers, after visiting the city areas found.
Make shift shops, hawker markets remained close in most of the parts of the day and kitchen markets facing very few customers as people not coming out from home without emergency needs.
The drainage system in the city was cleaned often to face the situation and improve the condition during heavy monsoon rain, claimed Barisal City Corporation mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal.
However, water logging on different city roads and low lying areas caused due to filling and grabbing canals, lack of proper drainage and sewerage system and absence of city protection embankment, Barisal City Corporation mayor explained.
Local met office recorded amount of rain fall as 208 milimeter within last 24-hour till 9:00 Thursday, said Abdul Quddus, senior observer of the office.
The city-sky will remain cloudy with low to mid ranged raining and gusty wind with 15-20 Km per hour for next one or two days, told Pronab Saha, in charge of local weather forecast office.
Creating low on the bay, arrival of monsoon air flow and attraction of crossing full moon causing heavy downpours in the region and made conditions of river estuaries and sea were very rough with high waves and strong tides and gusty winds, said Prodip Kumar, officer of Kalapara weather radar station.
All fishing boats and trawlers asked to take safe shelter till improvement of the weather and weather signal no.3 hoisted in coastal region, the coastal weather official said.
BSS from Khulna adds: Downpour has submerged most part of the city in knee-deep to waist deep water, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
Beginning in the last midnight, the rain continued unabated resulting the city waterlogged that refrained commoner from coming out of houses.
Forecasting Officer of Khulna Met Office Amirul Azad said, 43 millimeters (mm) of rainfall in the city was recorded in the last 24 hours till 3.00pm today.
A total of 210 mm of rainfall was recorded in the last week of the rainy month Ashar, he said adding that in last year 410 mm rainfall was recorded in rainy season.
The rain is likely to continue for the next couple of days caused by the monsoon wind. We advised to hoist local cautionary signal number-3 in two sea ports, Chittagong and Mongla, he added.
Almost all the low lying areas, residential houses, educational institutions, markets in Borobazar, Khanzahan Ali Hawkers Market, Labonchara, Natunbazar and Harintana have been affected severely by water logging.
Roads, lanes and bi-lanes in KDA Avenue, Royal and PTI intersection, Khanjahan Ali and some other low-lying areas in the city were also inundated.
Visiting the low-lying areas in the city today morning this correspondent witnessed that rainwater has flooded houses, kitchen markets, slums and the ground floors of most buildings.
A few customers were seen at the markets of the city, vehicles did not ply the streets while few rickshaws and battery-run easy bikes were found.
