People suffer from various waterborne diseases by drinking contaminated and adulterated drinks on open spaces in city streets while trying to get respite from heat wave,
The health experts warn that the roadside drinks from hawkers may be harmful for human health.
Dr. ABM Abdullah, the Dean of Medicine Faculty of Bangabandhu Medical University Hospital, told The New Nation, ” The unhealthy drinks and juice may cause serious harm to the human health. It may cause diarrhoea, dysentery and other water
 linked diseases.”
But the heat driven people forget the awareness of experts and overlook doctors’ advices.
At Gulistan Golapshah Mazar on Thursday, a hawker was seen mixing rotten fruits and ice with unclean water in a big bowl to prepare juice. There were rotten papayas, bananas and other fruits in his bowl.
The hawker mixed the fruits by a blender machine and kept those in glasses. The heat driven people use to take that juice and eventually fall ill. A similar scene has been seen at Motijheel Shapla Chattar. A hawker was seen to prepare lemon drinks. But he used very low amount of sugar in presence of customers. But they said, the drinks were so sweet. Sources said, the dishonest hawkers often use unhealthy chemical ‘saccharin’ to make the juice sweet. The experts said, the saccharin is serious harmful for human health.
At the same time, the hawker also use rotten or formalin mixed lemons in the juice. The sources said, the hawkers buy huge number of lemons at a time at cheap rate. They use that for many days. They mix formalin to protect lemon from becoming rotten. On the other hand, the same lemon they use many days in water to make juice.
When contacted, the hawker did not admit that they use unhealthy materials.
Sumon, a Farmgate based juice hawker, said, he uses fresh fruits and safe water for prepare juice. Similarly other hawkers also claimed that their materials were fresh and safe. But their statements are not `true’, said a doctor.
“Acute heat wave forced me to take drinks from the hawker. But now, I feel pain and other problems in stomach,” said Abdul Quadir, a rickshaw puller from Gulistan in the capital city.
Sources said, the acute heat wave may last for few more days. People stay at home, keep themselves away from sun shine, drink more water, take ice melted drinks and juices.
The outgoing people including school going children, often take drinks from the hawkers.
The children become mostly victim of the adulteration drinks. Many of the guardians said their school-going children became sick after taking such drinks from school side pavements. Many of them suffer from stomach ache, diarrhoea, vomiting, dysentery and other problems.
On many spots in the city streets including Gulistan, Jatrabari, Malibagh, Farmgate, Mohakhali, Gabtoli, people are witnessed to drink juice and other drinks from hawkers on the pavements.
