Heat-related diseases increasing in Khulna, children, elderly people main victims

Due to ongoing scorching heat wave diarrhoea has taken a serious turn in Khulna as a large number of children and elderly people have been attacked with the water borne disease due to hot weather.
Sources at Khulna shisu Hospital Said, at least 600 children are coming to the hospital along with their parents for taking treatment every day which is higher than used time. Among them 50 percent children are admitted as their conditions deteriorate. The remaining children are sent back after giving primary treatment and advising them to take treatment keeping home.
Most of the children are suffering from summer – borne diseases including diarrhea, dehydration and pneumonia due to rigorous heat wave which has been Sweeping for the last 5 days. People of different age and group including children and elderly people are being admitted to different hospital and private clinics everyday for the few days.
The number of adult male and female patients has also increased in the last 3 days.
Being unable to accommodate all the patients most of the hospitals and clinics set up tents in the premises and most of the patients are being given treatment there this correspondent found in a recent visit. Most of the patients come from the city, its outskirts and upazila areas.
Samsunnahar Kakoli of city’s Boyra area comes to the Shishu hospital for the treatment of her one year male baby Sami who was suffering from acute pneumonia .Talked to her this Correspondent learnt that she had been in the hospital for two weeks and after getting treatment she was returning home with her children. At present her baby is well, Kakoli said.
Altaf Hossain,45, a small trader came to Mirerdanga I D hospital in the city who was suffering from diarrhea, but he was not getting proper treatment.
Dr. Kawser Ali, a noted child specialist and also public health expert said, people specially elderly ones, school going children, office goers, day laborers, shopkeepers and pedestrians are being attacked with various heat-related infections like diarrhea, pneumonia and fever taking street food and contaminated cold water.
He advised all people not to take large amounts of sugar and cold drinks as it causes stomach cramps.
Physicians of Khulna Shishu hospital said, there are only 250 beds in the hospital. Patients are increasing at present. As a result some patients are given advice to take rest at homes and keeping babies at clean environment and feeding fluid meals including saline.
On the other hand, Khulna met office said, the highest temperature in Khulna was recorded 40 degree Celsius till Tuesday. The heat wave may continue till May, met office sources said adding that possibility of rainfall is a few in 2 weeks.
