Banani rape case: Hearing on remand deferred

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday deferred the hearing on whether the two accused, who raped a young woman will be placed on remand or not, deferred to February 11.
Magistrate Mahmuda Akhter of the CMM Court passed the order deferring the hearing on remand as

it could not decide who would conduct the hearing on behalf of the two accused persons.
Several lawyers submitted vocalotnama to the court to conduct the hearing. The court sent the petitions to Dhaka Bar Association for selecting lawyer to conduct the hearing. On Thursday, the accused were produced in the court on the occasion of the remand hearing.
 Earlier, investigation officer of the case and also Police Inspector (Investigation) of Banani Police Station, Mohammad Borhan Uddin, sought five days’ remand for each accused. The accused persons are Ragib Ahmed, 28, and Md Rubel Hossain alias Joy.
The complainant of the case mentioned in her First Information Report (FIR) that she was acquainted with Ragib Ahmed, 28, many days ago through mobile telephone. Later, he invited her to his so-called birthday function at Star Guest House Banani on Saturday night. Later, the young girl went there when Joy was also present. Joy is a son of Amir Hossain alias Ajmir Doctor of village Char Dicri under the Muladi Upazila of Barisal, while Ragib is a son of Anwar Hossain of village Darirampur under Shahjadpur Upazila of Sirajganj district.
The accused confined the woman in the guest house for the whole night and both of them raped her. After the accused released her, she filed the case with the police station and they were immediately arrested.
