Hearing on plea over Fakhrul`s surrender Aug 31

UNB, Dhaka :The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will hear on August 31 a petition filed by BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir seeking more time for surrendering before a lower court.Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique fixed the date on Monday and sent the petition to the regular bench of the Appellate Division for hearing.Fakhrul’s lawyer Sagir Hossain said the Appellate Division granted bail to BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul in three violence cases for six weeks, which will expire on August 25.As Fakhrul is now abroad for treatment, he will not be able to surrender before the lower court by the stipulated time, he said. Earlier, on June 18, the High Court granted bail to the BNP leader in the three cases for violence. Two of the cases were filed with Paltan Police Station while the other with Motijheel Police Station.The Appellate Division on July 13 upheld the High Court bail for six weeks to the BNP acting secretary general in three violence cases.A four-member bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, passed the order considering the necessity of Fakhrul’s advanced treatment abroad. The SC came up with the order after receiving a report from a five-member medical team, comprising two surgeons of vascular surgery, a respiratory medicine specialist, a medicine specialist and a cardiologist, formed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital (BSMMU) authorities on the health condition of the BNP leader.
