Staff Reporter :
A vacation bench of the Supreme Court fixed July 31 for the hearing of BNP Chief Khaleda Zia’s leave-to-appeal petition in the Niko graft case.
Chamber judge Justice Hasan Foiz Siddique fixed the date upon a petition filed by the BNP Chairperson seeking a stay on the trial Niko corruption case.
Khaleda filed the petition last year challenging a High Court verdict that had cleared the way for running the trial proceedings of Niko graft case.
The High Court on June 18, 2015 rejected a petition filed by Khaleda challenging the legality of the trial
proceedings of the cases filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The ACC filed the case on December 9, 2007 on the charge of abusing power to award a gas exploration and extraction deal to a Canadian Company when she was the Prime Minister between 2001 and 2006.
Charges were pressed against 11 people, including Khaleda on May 5, 2008, for allegedly causing loss of Tk 137 billion to the State Exchequer.
AJ Mohammad Ali, Barrister Ragib Rauf Choudhury and Zakir Hossain Bhuiyan represented Khaleda while Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
