Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Tuesday deferred the hearing on a bail petition of BNP leader Mirza Abbas to April 27.
The two-member HC bench, comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan, passed the order when Abbas’ lawyer Advocate Joynul Abedin filed a time petition to the court.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the corruption case with
Shahbagh Police Station on March 6 last year against the BNP leader on the charge of irregularities in plot distribution when he was a minister of BNP government.
Abbas, the BNP-blessed mayor candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation polls, submitted petitions for anticipatory bail for taking part in the election campaigns. The election is scheduled to take place on April 28.
Joynul Abedin placed the petition for deferment, saying that they were waiting for the decision of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha about the split orders of another HC bench regarding the other two bail petitions of Abbas.
Earlier, the HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed the split order on the bail petitions of Abbas in two cases on April 15.
Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique granted three weeks’ bail for the BNP leader, while the other judge of the two-member bench Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore rejected his bail plea, asking the Abbas to surrender to the lower court.
With the split judgment of the HC bench, it is expected that the Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha will constitute a new bench for further hearing on the bail prayers of Abbas.
Mirza Abbas, a standing committee member of BNP and former mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation in the 1990s, is not being able to take part in his electoral campaign as cases are pending against him.
In the absence of Abbas, his wife Afroza Abbas has taken the charge of the election campaign for him.
