The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday extended till November 27 its earlier order that stayed a High Court (HC) verdict granting bail to Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna in a sedition case.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order upon a government petition seeking stay on the HC verdict.
The HC on August 30, granted bail to Manna in the sedition case. On September 4, the SC stayed the High Court order on bail after the government appealed for stay order.
The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station on March 5, 2015 on charge of sedition.
Manna was arrested on February 25 last year, a day after his telephone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka about strengthening the anti-government movement, among many issues, was leaked.
On February 24 last year, Gulshan police sued Manna bringing charges against him of instigating the armed forces.
On November 10, the High Court granted bail to detained Manna in the case filed on charge of provoking the army to topple the government. Upon a government petition, the SC recently stayed the High Court order of bail in this case till November 27.
In one conversation, Manna, the former organising secretary of the ruling Awami League, was heard talking to Khoka, and the other call was reportedly transitted to an unknown person. During these conversations, the man asked Manna if he would like to sit with top army officers to talk about bringing a changeover in the country.
