The High Court (HC) has fixed February 9 for hearing on petitions filed by the BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in the GATCO graft case.
A HC bench comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan fixed the date upon a prayer submitted by
the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Prosecutor Khurshid Alam Khan and Deputy Attorney General Gourat Roy were present in the court yesterday but there is no defence lawyer.
The Commission initiated to make the case active after seven years. It was filed by ACC Deputy Director Golam Shahriar Chowdhury with Tejgaon Police Station on September 2 in 2007.
According to the case report, the accused in collaboration with one another appointed the GATCO, a company, to handle containers in Dhaka and Chittagong depots for which the State suffered a loss of about Tk 1,000 crore.
Later on May 13 in 2008, the Commission submitted a charge sheet to the court accusing 24 people.
The lawyers of the accused lodged a writ challenging the legality of the case.
On July 15 the same year, the HC issued a rule upon the ACC to explain as to why the case would not be declared illegal.
The court also postponed all proceeding of the case for two months.
