Court Correspondent :
The Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka on Thursday fixed June 29 for the next hearings in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case and the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
Begum Khaleda Zia was scheduled to make a defence statement in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on Thursday. She reached the court at 11.35 am set up in Old Dhaka’s Bakshibazar area and left the court at about 12 noon.
Defence lawyers sought time citing physical illness of senior lawyer
Abdur Rezak Khan who was due to cross-examine the Investigation Officer (IO) of the Zia Charitable Trust case on Thursday. Another defence lawyer Nuruzzaman Topan told newsmen that Advocate Rezak Khan is in a hospital with Chikungunya fever. The defence lawyer Aminul Islam asked the IO one question only following a court order and then Judge Dr Md Akhteruzzaman adjourned the hearing.
The hearing was also adjourned for the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case after Khaleda Zia’s lawyers pleaded for time citing that the case was awaiting a decision in the High Court. The case was filed on July 8, 2008 accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others of embezzlement of over Tk 2.1 crore forming a “fake” trust which allegedly existed only in paper.
Earlier, on June 15, Advocate Rezak Khan became sick while cross-examining Harunur Rashid, Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), who investigated the Zia Charitable Trust case. The court was then adjourned.
The Zia Charitable Trust graft case was filed by the ACC on August 8, 2011 against the BNP Chief and three others for embezzling Tk 31.5 million.
