Staff Reporter :The High Court (HC) on Thursday fixed April 22 for hearing on a petition submitted by BNP’s Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman’s wife Zubaida Rahman, challenging the legality of a corruption case against her. The HC bench, comprising Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan, passed the order considering a prayer from the Anti-Corruption Commission’s (ACC) lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan to dispose of the petition. The ACC filed the case against Zubaida, Tarique Rahman and her mother Iqbal Mand Banu on September 26, 2007 for amassing assets through illegal means and concealing information in their wealth statements.According to the charge sheet, Zubaida and her mother aided and abetted Tarique to amass wealth worth around Tk 2.75 crore beyond his known sources of income. Tarique also concealed information about assets worth around Tk 2.17 crore in his statement.Later, Zubaida, now in London along with Tarique, filed a petition with the HC to scrap the case. After hearing on the petition, the HC issued a rule upon the government on April 8, 2008 to explain as to why the case proceedings against Zubaida should not be scrapped. The HC allowed the ACC to become a party in the rule on April 2 this year so that the ACC lawyer could place argument during hearing on the petition.
