The High Court (HC) on Wednesday started the hearing on appeal petition of former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad against trial court conviction in a graft case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus adjourned the hearing till December 1 after concluding the first-day hearing.
Advocate Sheikh Sirajul Islam took part in the hearing on behalf of H M Ershad,
while Advocate Khurshed Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
The now-defunct Bureau of Anti-Corruption filed the case against Ershad and others with Cantonment Police Station on January 8, 1991.
According to the case statement, Ershad allegedly caused a loss of Tk 1.90 crore to the State Exchequer as he didn’t submit various gifts when he was in power.
A Special Court on February 3 in 1992 awarded Ershad three years imprisonment. The trial court also ordered authority concerned to seize this money and a car.
Later Ershad filed appeal with the HC against trial court order. HC accepted his petition for hearing and granted him bail in the case.
ACC on June 26 in 2012 filed a petition with the HC to be a part in the Ershad’s appeal. The HC bench granted ACC’s petition.
The ACC on August 22 in 2016 filed another petition to fix a date of hearing on that appeal petition. After that the petition came in the cause list of the HC several times, but no hearing was held. At last the hearing started on Wednesday.
