Staff Reporter :
The appeal of former President and Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad has been enlisted in the High Court Divisions cause list for hearing on Sunday.
Advocate Khurshid of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) moved the appeal with the apex court. The ACC filed the case against Ershad with Cantonment Police Station for misappropriating Tk 1.91 crore by misusing power at different times when he was the President of the State from December 11, 1983 to December 6, 1990.
A Special Judge Court convicted Ershad and sentenced him three years imprisonment on February 3, 1992. The Court also ordered the authority concerned to confiscate the money and a Toyota Land Cruiser car for committing corruption misusing his power.
Ershad filed an appeal with the HC, challenging the lower court verdict the same year. The HC stayed the lower court verdict on February 26, 2012.
Ershad faced around three dozen cases after he was toppled in the 1990 mass movement. He was sentenced in three of the cases and served time in one.
In an affidavit submitted to the ACC before the January 5, 2014 election, Ershad said he had eight cases against him at the time, and the other cases had been disposed or he had been relieved of the charges. The HC stayed proceedings of four of the eight cases.
Proceedings of three cases, including one over Major General Manzur murder case, are underway.
The HC is now hearing the case over the embezzlement of gifts he had received as the President.
