Ramna blast case: Hearing on death references begins

The High Court (HC) on Sunday began hearing on the death reference and appeals in the sensational Ramna Batamul carnage case of 2001.
The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim heard the case. The bench fixed today (Monday) for resuming the hearing, Assistant Attorney General Md Nurul Islam Matubbar
told the reporters. Yesterday, the HC began the proceedings of Ramna Batamul case with the state counsels reading out from the first information report of the case and statements from its witnesses.
If a lower court sentences any person to death in a case, its judgment is examined by the HC through hearing arguments for confirmation of the death sentence. The case documents and judgment reach as death reference to the HC from the lower court in seven days from the date of the verdict.
A Dhaka Court on June 23, 2014 handed down death penalty to eight members of Harkatul Jihad al Islami (HuJi), including its top leader Mufti Abdul Hannan Munshi, for killing 10 people in the attack during Pahela Baishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul in 2001.
Akbar Hossain, Arif Hasan Suman, Md Tajuddin, Jahangir Alam, Abu Bakar, Abdul Hye and Shafiqur Rahman also awarded death penalty.
Six other members of the banned organization were sentenced to life imprisonment for involvement in the blasts. They are Shahadat Ullah, Sabbir, Sheikh Farid, Abdur Rouf, Md Yahia and Abu Taher.
Sources said that five out of 14 accused who were sentenced to death were absconding. They are Tajuddin, Jahangir Alam, Abu Bakar, Shafiqur Rahman and Abdul Hye.
Six appeal petitions of seven accused and death references will be heard in the HC. Mufti Hannan, Akbar Hossain, Suman, Shahadat Ullah and Abu Taher appealed separately. Sheikh Farid and Md Yahia appealed jointly. A jail appeal of Mufti Hannan, Akbar Hossain and Suman will be heard with those appeal.
