Gazipur court bomb blast: Hearing on appeal begins

The High Court (HC) Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday began death reference hearing on the suicide bomb attack of Gazipur court on November 29, 2005 that killed eight people including lawyers and police and injured several others.
The prosecution placed the 1166 pages paper book of charge sheets, and deposition of prosecution witnesses to a HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice J.B.M. Hasan.
Deputy Attorney General Sheikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir and Assistant Attorney
General Shahidul Islam Khan represented the state. A trial court on June 20, 2013 sentenced 10 members of the banned Islamist militant outfit Jamat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to death for the deadly crime.
A member of the ‘suicide squad’ in disguise of a lawyer carried out the bomb attack into the hall room of Gazipur Bar Association at about 9:45 am.
Jaydevpur police filed a case in this connection the same day. Investigation Officer of the case ASP (CID) Ismail Hossain submitted the charge sheet on July 4, 2007.
The convicts are Enayetullah alia Walid, Arifur Rahman, Murshid-ul-Islam alias Masud, Saidur Munshi, Abdullah Al Shohail, Nizamuddin Reza, Tayebur Rahman alias Hasan, Ashraful Islam, Md Shafiullah alias Tarique, and Adnan Sami alias Jahangir.
The Gazipur blast was one of the two that took place almost simultaneously when people were going to work. The other happened in Chittagong, the second biggest city in the country.
The alleged bomber set off at least one device at a police checkpoint near the courts. Two police officers guarding the building were killed, and the suspect was caught in the blast.
In all, at least 10 persons were killed in the two attacks, including the alleged bomber in Gazipur. About 40 people were injured.
