A Dhaka court yesterday started recording the depositions of witnesses in the case against Jubo Mohila League’s expelled leader Shamima Nur Papiya and her husband Mofizur Rahman alias Sumon Chowdhury and then the court fixed January 16 to record the depositions of other witnesses.
Anti-Corruption Commission Deputy Director Shahin Ara Momtaz, who is the complainant of the case testified on Wednesday, while Judge Mohammad Ali Hosain of the Special Judge Court-3 of Dhaka recorded his statement.
The total number of prosecution witnesses in the case is 19.
On October 6, Judge KM Imrul Kayesh of the Senior Special Judge of Dhaka took cognizance of the charge sheet and sent the case dossier to the Special Judge Court -3 for quick trial.
According to the case statement, Papia paid over Tk 3.33 crore to the Westin Hotel as charge between October 12, 2019 and February 22, 2020.
On February 22, last year, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Papia, her husband Mofiz and their two cohorts from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with counterfeit banknotes, foreign currencies and cash money.
The elite force, later, raided their two luxurious flats in the capital Indira Road area and recovered a foreign-made pistol, two magazines, 20 bullets, five bottles of foreign liquor and Tk 58.41 lakh in cash , among other things.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station filed two case against them- one under the Narcotics Control Act and another under the Special Power Act.
On October 12, they were imprisoned for 20 years in the case filed under the Arms Act.
