HDI to play role in poverty alleviation

FBCCI stresses for holding scientific seminars to achieve ultimate goal

Terming the Haor area of Mymensingh as very neglected and poverty-stricken, speakers at a seminar on Wednesday hoped that the recently established Haor Development Institute (HDI) would play a vital role in solving the problems like poverty of Haor area.
“As the Haor Development Institute has been established, the problems of Haor area could be solved through research based activities of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU),” said BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar while addressing the seminar as the chief guest.
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) organized the seminar ‘Prospects and Challenges of Agricultural Production in Haor Areas of Mymensingh Agricultural Zone’ at at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, said a press release.
Prof. Dr. Md. Ali Akbar, Vice Chancellor of BAU was present at the seminar as the Chief Guest. Director of FBCCI, Senior Professors of the university, Business leaders of Mymensingh Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Haor Experts also attended the program presided over by Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad, Secretary General of FBCCI. The seminar was supported by Friedrich-Naumann Foundation (FNF), Germany.
 Secretary General of FBCCI Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad chaired the seminar. Dr. Sultan Uddin Bhuiyan, Professor of Agronomy Department of BAU presented the keynote paper.
Md. Masud, Director of FBCCI, Dr. Nazmul Hossain, Country Director of FNF and S M Bazlur Rahman, Vice President of Mymensingh Chamber, among others, spoke on the occasion.
 Dr. Sultan Uddin Bhuiyan, Professor of Agronomy Department of BAU presented the keynote paper while the designated discussants delivered their opinion.
 Chairperson of the seminar Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad, Secretary General of FBCCI thanked the keynote presenter and the professors for their active participation. He requested the country representative of FNF to work in partnership with the Agricultural University.
Mir Shahabuddin Mohammad also urged the business leaders of Mymensingh Chamber to come forward with development programs for the Haor area. The Chairperson also expressed his interest to hold more scientific seminars jointly with the Agricultural University.

It may be mentioned that FBCCI in partnership with FNF earlier organized different other region- based seminars in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal.
