Case against DIG Prisons: HC wants to know progress of probe

The High Court on Wednesday wanted to know the latest situation of the investigation in a case filed against the suspended Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) of Sylhet division, Partha Gopal Banik, over recovery of Tk eight million from his residence in the capital.
The concerned investigation officer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has been asked to comply with the order by January 30, 2020.
At the same time, the court fixed February 2 for
 further hearing on the bail petition filed by Partha Gopal Banik in the case.
The High Court Bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice AKM Zahirul Huq passed the order after holding hearing on the bail petition.
Barrister Shafiq Ahmed and advocate Kamrul Islam appeared in the court on behalf of Partha Gopal Banik while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
Judge of senior special judge’s court of Dhaka, KM Emrul Kayesh, on September 15, 2019, rejected a bail petition of the suspended Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) of Sylhet division, in the case.
Then on September 30, 2019, Partha Gopal Banik, filed the petition with the High Court through his lawyer challenging the trial court’s order rejecting his bail in the case.
On October 3, the HC Bench of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan dropped from the cause-list his bail petition in the case. Then he moved in the new HC Bench.
The Anti-Corruption Commission on July 28, 2019, detained Partho Gopal after recovering Tk eight million from his residence in Dhaka.
The official, Partha Gopal Banik, allegedly obtained the money through corruption.
Assistant Director of ACC Md Salahuddin filed a case under Money Laundering Act against Partha Gopal Banik the following day.
Earlier ACC Director Mohammad Yousuf quizzed Partha over allegations that he committed irregularities and corruption as DIG (Prisons) of Chattogram division. The interrogation continued at ACC headquarters for about four hours.
After interrogation, ACC team accompanied by Partha went to his Green Road residence and recovered the money.
They later detained him, and showed him arrested after the case was filed, said Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya, ACC’s Public Relations Officer.
