The High Court on Tuesday wanted to know about the reported incident of police torture on one Tajul Islam at Haragach Police Station in Rangpur, the mob’s attack on law enforcers and the government steps taken in this regard. The HC bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman asked Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta to inquire of the police about the incident and to inform the court on Wednesday.
Earlier Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a Supreme Court lawyer, placed some news cutting before the High Court bench and sought Suo Moto (voluntary) order from the court. Then the court asked the state counsel to inquire the police about the incidents.
Mr Amit Das Gupta said, “The court has asked to find out the entire issue and fixed tomorrow (Wednesday) for passing order.”
A mob reportedly threw brickbats at Haragach Police Station in Rangpur’s Kaunia and vandalized a few police vehicles on Monday evening after news spread that a man was tortured to death by the law enforcers.
Police, however, said they did not torture anyone.
Locals said the incident happened after a team from the police station carried out a drive in Dalalhaat village in Kaunia upazila around 6:30pm on information that several people were taking drugs there.
During the drive, Tajul Islam, 55, of the village, along with others was detained. At that time, “police walloped Tajul and pushed him against a wall”. He died there, several locals claimed.
As this news spread, hundreds of locals besieged the police station. Some of them threw brickbats targeting policemen inside. The mob also vandalized a few police vehicles there.
