The High Court on Wednesday sought the investigation report of the alleged custodial death of one Tajul Islam in Rangpur, and as such a four-member committee has been formed by the police administration in order to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
The court asked Rangpur police to submit the probe report, including the post mortem report of Tajul Islam, and also the copy of the case
filed over the death, before it by November 11. The High Court Bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order on a Suo Moto (voluntary) move after hearing a statement sent by Rangpur police over the matter.
The statement said police have conducted inquest on the body of Tajul Islam and found no injury marks. The Bench set November 15 for passing further order on the matter.
Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a Supreme Court lawyer, on Tuesday placed some news cutting before the High Court Bench and sought Suo Moto order from the court. Then the court asked Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta to inquire the police about the incidents.
Complying with the court order Das Gupta contacted with the Rangpur police and received a statement from them which was placed in the court on Wednesday.
A four-member committee has been formed in order to conduct an inquiry into the death of Tajul Islam and the committee has been asked to submit a report in seven days, Amit Das Gupta said citing the statement.
A mob reportedly threw brickbats at Haragach Police Station in Rangpur’s Kaunia and vandalised a few police vehicles on Monday evening after news spread that a man was tortured to death by the law enforcers.
Police, however, said they did not torture anyone.
Locals said the incident happened after a team from the police station carried out a drive at Dalalhaat village in Kaunia upazila around 6:30pm on information that several people were taking drugs there.
During the drive, Tajul Islam, 55, of the village, along with others was detained. At that time, “police beat up Tajul and pushed him against a wall”. He died there, several locals claimed.
As this news spread, hundreds of locals besieged the police station. Some of them threw brickbats targeting policemen inside. The mob also vandalised a few police vehicles there.
