High Court has fixed Apr 11 to deliver its verdict on a lower court’s judgement that gave death penalty to four accused in a 2015 case of murder of minor boy Samiul Islam Rajon.
The court fixed the date on Sunday after hearing death reference and appeals of the defendants.
The four defendants, including a Saudi expatriate, Kamrul Islam, are charged with the murder of 13-year-old Rajon.
Rajon was beaten to death for alleged theft at Sylhet’s Kumargaon on Jul 8, 2015.
One accomplice of the murderers videotaped the
incident and shared it on social media that triggered a furore.
The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Jahangir Hossain will decide on the death sentence awarded to the four on Apr 11. The main accused of the case Kamrul Islam fled to Saudi Arabia two days after the death of Rajon. He was brought back with the help from other expatriates and put on trial.
Investigating Officer Suranjit Talukder submitted the chargesheet to the court naming 13 people on Aug 16 that year.
Sylhet Metropolitan Session Judges Court wrapped up the trial in 17 days and declared death penalty for four and life term for one on Nov 8. The rest were fined and penalised with different prison terms.
Kamrul Islam, Moyna Chawkider, Tajuddin Ahmad Badol and Zakir Hossain Pavel received death penalty.
Nur Mia, who videotaped the incident and shared it on social media, was given life term in prison.
The court handed seven-years jail term to three brothers of Kamrul – Muhit Alam, Ali Hayder and Shamim Ahmad. Dulal Ahmad and Ayaz Ali received one year of prison sentence and were fined with Tk1,000 each. Rest of the accused were fined Tk10,000 each.
Zakir Hossain Pavel and Shamim Ahmad had been on the run since the start of the trial.
Sylhet court acquitted Firoz Mia, Ajmot Ullah and Ruhul Amin in the case.
